EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Volunteer Attorney
Are you an Illinois attorney who is unemployed, underemployed, or have free time during the workday?  CARPLS Legal Aid is looking for a corps of volunteer attorneys to counsel clients on Cook County’s legal aid telephone hotline.

CARPLS Works is a new volunteer project that specifically targets unemployed and underemployed attorneys in the Chicago area. The project seeks to put these attorneys to work serving the unmet legal needs of ow-income families who have been disproportionately impacted by the recent economic crisis.

  • CARPLS Works attorneys will be asked to volunteer 4 hours each week providing advice and counsel to low-income client via the legal aid hotline.
  • Volunteers will receive training in the limited practice areas of family, consumer debt and landlord-tenant law
  • All volunteers must be active, licensed Illinois attorneys.  All work performed for CARPLS is covered by CARPLS malpractice insurance.
  • We hope volunteers will stay with us as long as they can, but we understand that most volunteers will have the goal if finding full time work.  If you should find full time work, CARPLS has a Wednesday night volunteer program that you may be interested in participating in on a continuing basis.

As an attorney, you have a valuable skill, which can benefit a great many of needy families. The CARPLS Works project gives you the chance to make productive use of that skill during your job search. In addition to providing a service to your community, CARPLS Works also gives you a chance to develop new legal skills, network with your peers and round-out your resume. Working on our team will mean you will meet many Chicago area attorneys, giving you inside access to available employment opportunities at many of Chicago’s top area law firms and corporate law departments. If you would like to answer the call to help Cook County’s low-income residents, please send an email and resume to

"I enjoy working at CARPLS because I know we are providing a service to people by giving them advice, brief services, and/or referrals  regarding their legal problems.  We are helping clients who otherwise would not be able to obtain assistance.   There is no better feeling than knowing that you have empowered a client in addressing their legal problem."

- Ashlee Highland, CARPLS Supervising Attorney
